To love oneself definitely is the beginning of a lifelong romance. Just ponder this for a moment.
You are the only person that will be with you for your whole entire lifetime. Shouldn't this be your most important relationship? It is also the basis for any other relationship, either platonic or romantic, that you have in your lifetime. Family members, loved ones, friends, partners, and spouses will all come and go. Life is very temporary and we can't change that we will have experiences in our lives that cause people to leave us. And yet you will always remain as part of your life. And, you will still remain you, at your very essence, even after you've passed away from this earth. So can you see how this relationship with yourself is key?
You must be able to love and accept yourself, where you are at currently in your life. We're all imperfect and it is those supposed imperfections which make us wonderfully unique. Sure, you can change and evolve and that's wonderful too. But any current or perceived flaw should not in any way keep you from loving yourself deeply as you are right now, in this moment. Our bodies, our possessions, and our personalities are all a temporary means of identification. We are a wonderful, beautiful essence of love and light at the core and that is who we truly are and will be after we leave this existence. We are not this body, we are not our personality, we are not truly any of the things we identify with and could potentially hate about ourselves. We are here to grow and develop as a spirit and they are just the tools that we use to do so.
So we should treat ourselves lovingly and with deep respect and in doing so your are showing others how you wish to be treated. And when we are reciprocating this way of being towards others, they may find it easier to accept themselves in such a way. Does this mean everyone will love us and treat us as they should? Absolutely not! However, you will know that since they are unable to treat you in the same way, that they are best left outside of your inner boundaries where they could mistreat you. Send them lovingly and respectfully on their way to live the best life the way they choose. If someone truly does not understand that loving yourself is vital and chooses to see it as being selfish then they truly have not found the importance for themselves to do so. And again, if they choose to mistreat you, send them lovingly on their way.
When you're able to show yourself this deep love and respect the world in turn, will benefit from your doing so. It will deepen your connection with the world and others you are surrounded with as well.
